Our Story

The beauty is, when we design a TMP we think differently to other traffic management companies, because we wear two hats - we design them as if we are designing them for ourselves...

In 2015, a small height access company called Hanging Around Ltd came under new ownership. Hanging Around had three bucket trucks that buzzed around Wellington installing signs and lifting tradesmen into the air. So how on earth did this turn into one of Wellington's fastest growing Traffic Management companies?

Well... we realised very quickly that traffic management was going to be a key requirement for our business. We worked on the roads, we worked next to and above footpaths and we frequently compromised road users and pedestirans.

Originally, we used third party traffic management companies to set up sites for us - but it wasn't a great move. We found that due to the nature of our work, using a third party was clunky. Often we would arrive to a site the traffic company had spent 40 minutes setting up, only to tell them it was too windy and we'd have to move to the next site. The same thing could happen a few times in a day. It didn't work, it was too slow... and then the invoices starting rolling in. Ouch.

So we set off on our own path. Trained ourselves, purchased the basic signage and started running traffic management in-house.

Word caught on.

Some of our clients were sick of dealing with Councils and were growing tired of their current traffic management providers. Some of our clients said they would love for us to do their traffic management...

So we did.

We trained ourselves more, we bought more gear and we picked up more clients.

Hanging Around Traffic Management was born.

We have now been operating for around 7 years and we class ourselves as experts in Level 1 traffic management and all things involved with it, including all the different types of permits and inner workings of your local Council.

The beauty is, when we design a TMP we think differently to other traffic management companies, because we wear two hats - we design them as if we are designing them for ourselves, our bucket truck company. So we design a TMP that has safety as the number one priority, but we also try not to break the bank. Cost is front of mind.

We have a great team, we are growing and we are proudly Wellington owned.

Give us a try.

Our Services

We provide a range of traffic management services to the Wellington region, starting with your traffic management plan and ending with the onsite traffic management.

Onsite Traffic Management (TTM)

Our traffic management team will provide care for pedestrian and traffic movements through, or past your worksite.

HATM specialises in works on Level 1/CAT A/B roads (roads that aren't State Highways or motorways) in Wellington, Lower Hutt and Porirua.

Traffic Management Plans (TMP)

A traffic management plan or TMP is a comprehensive document that outlines the relevant stakeholders, the work taking place and the times and dates of a project.

It also covers how the traffic management will be set up and removed and what areas of the carriageway are going to be affected... we are experts at writing them!

Corridor Access Requests (CAR)
A Corridor Access Request (commonly known as a CAR) is effectively a Council permit that is required if you are intending to reduce access to any part of the road reserve – including the road surface, footpath and berm.
Road User Licenses (RUL)
A Road User License (commonly known as an RUL) is a permit required by Wellington City Council for temporary structures including scaffolding, hoarding, skip bins & shipping containers, gantries, construction loading zones, and other similar activities on road reserve.

Our Client Base

Our first client was ourselves. Since then, we have steadily expanded our client base and expertise to include pretty much everyone. Scaffolding, drainlaying, construction companies, film makers, concrete pumps, HIABs. We know how you work, so we know how to design your TMP.
