It all starts with the planning...
If you want to work on, or near a footpath or road then the very first step you need to take is to have a traffic management plan designed for your project.
Traffic management plans have to be written by a qualified, ticketed designer. Once they have been designed, they need to be approved by the Road Controlling Authority (RCA) of the area you are working in. Work can't start until the TMP has been approved by the RCA.
Planning in detail well before your project starts will save time and hassle when you begin - we speak from experience!
What is a TMP?
A TMP is a comprehensive document that outlines the relevant stakeholders, the work taking place and the times and dates of a project.
It also covers how the traffic management will be set up and removed, what areas of the carriageway are going to be affected and includes an on-site safety record to be filled out by the STMS during the project.
Lastly, traffic management diagrams (TMDs) are designed to show how the traffic management will be set out and function, where the worksite and safety zones are and where vehicles will be positioned.
Our Traffic Management Plans are developed by trained staff that hold the Waka Kotahi (NZTA) Temporary Traffic Management Planner (TTMP) qualification.
What’s the process?
Traffic plans can take up to three weeks to design and go through Council through to approval stage. The more detail you can provide in the pre-planning stage, the better as this helps to speed the process up.
Once the traffic management plan has been submitted, there is generally some back and forth between the TMP designer and the Council to make sure the plan is fit for purpose.
We liaise with the council so you don’t have to!
When all parties are satisfied, the TMP will be approved and then we work with you to book the traffic management in.
What if it's an emergency?
If there's an emergency then don't worry, common sense can prevail! There are systems in place to rush through TMPs or you may be able to work under 'urgent' or 'emergency' conditions. In these cases the traffic management would come first, with a traffic management plan submitted retrospectively.
